Wine, Woman and Song in Ensenada

Bienvenidos from the Wandering Berkmans!

Nothing like the view of the ocean to calm the soul and relax.  Ensenada, Mexico treats us well in this regard.  Our little bungalow on a hill is away from it all and gives us  the fresh air and ocean sounds we love.

Oh, yes, and dogs.  Many dogs.  So many dogs that Don is moving away from "Cautious with unknown dogs" to "let me pet you, Rottweiler cutie!"  When in Mexico...

Hotel Punta Morro was a treat for our anniversary dinner-- amazing views of crashing waves and seafood for the ages.  And a surprise treat at the end!

Who knew Mexico had an active winemaking community?  Ivan and Mario take us to 3 wineries where we spend the day trying some tasty wines and snacks.  Oh, and we meet more dogs.  Here is charming Carlota from Revuelto Winery.  Their Parabola wine was especially tasty.

A new wine we enjoyed is from the Nebbiolo grape.  One that surprised us-- a Rose that smelled exactly like watermelon Jolly Rancher but fortunately tasted nothing like it.

The port of Ensenada is home to many a souvenir shop and restaurant for the cruise ships that dock there.  And a good place to pick up a prescription or two.

La Bufadora- they call it a geyser although it was more like a huge wave against some impressive rocks.  Either way, we were happy to take the winding mountain roads, enjoy the view and record La Bufadora backwards without the crowds.
(I started this entry on my computer and am finishing what I can on my phone bc we’re leaving tomorrow for Seoul and Vietnam and I packed away my computer. I’ll try to get that video in next time. I posted it in my Instagram if you just can’t wait)

So we had the wine, I’m the woman (what were you expecting, I let Don cut loose?) so now we come to the song- our last night in Ensenada, dinner at Las Rosadas where Alberto made us at table side a delicious and lovely Ensalada Cesar (it really does originally come from Mexico!) and later at
the bar to sing classic rock tunes with a 3-piece combo.  Not terribly authentic but we all got into it

Next stop- San Diego, where we catch up with family over a bountiful lunch in a Jewish deli.  The “mini” sandwich had us laughing.  Great to see the Shapiro bunch.

A brief stop in Marina Del Rey, CA to see some beautiful sunsets and even a movie/tv shoot on Venice Beach.  Man walks over to woman in towel.  Points gun.  Other man yells “No!” Cut!   Cinema gold.

In our new feature we call SOL (Slice of Life and in honor of Solly B), we offer a little taste of culture in a snapshot or two.
Today's words of Mexican wisdom, loosely translated - "He/She who has magic doesn't need tricks."

And we enjoyed watching these men playing Backgammon in a local restaurant.  It was noon-- they were having coffee, we were ready for lunch.  We haven't quite got the meal timing right yet.

Next stop- Asia! Thanks for following along!
Don and Monica

  1. You must pet all the dogs. It's the law. :) Happy anniversary, happy holidays, and wishing you safe travels, as always.
